Néréides
Octopus skin on rag paper
The technique used to make the Nereids is close to gyotaku: a Japanese art which consists of making the imprint of a freshly caught fish which is coated with ink to keep track of it before consumption.
Here, it is directly the epidermis of the octopus which prints the paper. This thin skin outlines the cephalopod in various postures in textures and colors.
Between collage and print on old paper, it is the very material of the animal which generates an effect oscillating between ultra and surrealism.
